Halloween Costume Ideas for 2023

Halloween is my favorite holiday, and as a cosplayer, I like to dress up all year long. This month, I put together a list of great Halloween costume ideas based on new and old movies, TV shows, and video games to consider wearing for parties, events, or just at home for fun!

The Addams Family

As classic costumes go, The Addams Family is one for the ages. With the new Netflix show Wednesday, there are even more outfits to choose from, such as Wednesday’s Nevermore uniform or her iconic dress, as well Enid Sinclair’s cute outfits. There’s also the original looks from the TV show and movies.

Slashers

Killers and slashers are also classic costume choices for Halloween, ranging from Ghost Face (Scream), Micheal Myers (Halloween), Freddy Kreuger (Nightmare on Elm Street), Jason (Friday the 13th), Chucky (Child’s Play), and more. They’re easy to find or make, highly recognizable, and make for a scary good time! You can also put your own spin on a classic look to really stand out.

Witches

There are other wizarding media besides Harry Potter. You can still be a witch without being antisemitic (loose the hooked noses, please), and benefiting a TERF. Consider Sabrina Spellman from The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, one of the Sanderson sisters from Hocus pocus, or even creating your own witchy look this year! With so many ways to look witchy, you can even create a whole coven to go out with.

Barbie

Can we all agree that the Barbie movie was a great hit this year? And with it came a plethora of costumes, from Barbie’s various looks as well as Ken’s outfits! Whether you want to be a skater Barbie, Mojo Dojo Casa House Ken, or other iconic versions of the dolls, you’ll be in good company.

Video game killers

Last month I talked about Cult of the Lamb, which I made a cosplay from. There are plenty of other horror games that would make awesome Halloween costume ideas for this year, such as Lady Dimitrescu from Resident Evil: Village and an infected from The Last of Us.

Vampires

Vampire lovers have been craving more seasons of the odd group in the “reality-style” show WWDITS. Nadja’s fashion sense offers plenty of ways to dress to kill this season, and Laszlo has the coolest hat! There’s also a lot of vampire fashion showcased in AMC’s Interview with the Vampire show.

Dungeons & Dragons

This popular tabletop game has made recent appearances in TV (Stanger Things) and film (Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves) with plenty of characters to dress up as. You can also go as your own character or put together a new one for a D&D-themed party! This is a fun way to explore your creativity and embody the tiefling druid or catfolk bard you play with friends.

Disney’s Haunted Mansion

Disney fans get to dress up at the parks during the Halloween season as characters from the films, shows, and even rides! With the much-anticipated Haunted Mansion movie out, now is the perfect time to dress up as Madame Leota or another famous ghoul from the ride at Magic Kingdom. There are plenty of official and unofficial outfits to choose from, so have fun picking your favorite to wear!

Coupons

Don’t forgot to save while you shop for costumes and accessories! Spirit Halloween always has coupons to shave off a few bucks from your total so your spending isn’t so scary. HalloweenCostumes.com also has military and student discounts. You can even catch great deals at JOANN or Michael’s for crafting supplies and decorations.
