It’s Time to Get Spoopy

As we all know, Halloween is right around the corner (in my opinion, September should be called Spooptember). To begin the celebration, I’ve curated a list of media pertaining to October’s big day: the 31st.

1. Elvira comes out

In this article, The Mistress of Darkness, Elvira, recently published a memoir where she opens up about her relationship with another woman. Cassandra Peterson portrays the beloved Halloween icon and has come out after a 19-year-long relationship with Teresa Wierson. This is a great way to start the 2021 Halloween season for members of the LGBT+ community.

The two have been together for more than 19 years now, with Wierson taking on the role of Peterson’s assistant. They had to keep the relationship quiet because, as Peterson writes, the couple felt they had to protect the Elvira brand. “Would my fans hate me for not being what they expected me to be?” she shares in the book, adding, “I’m very aware that there will be some who will be disappointed and maybe even angry, but I have to live with myself, and at this point in my life, I’ve got to be truthful about who I am.”

2. The 12-foot skeleton

Last year’s ultimate Halloween decor was Home Depot’s 12-foot poseable skeleton, and this year everyone’s dying to get their own (including me). While it made a surprise restock appearance in July, it quickly sold out. The website says the item is unavailable, but I’ve heard tell that they’ve appeared in some stores. Beware, though! Scammers are already selling this bad boy on eBay and Amazon for a lot more than the original price–and that’s the scary part.

3. ColourPop’s Hocus Pocus collection

ColourPop already has my card saved with all of their unique crossover collections; now they’re getting into the holiday spirit with a Hocus Pocus collection. Two, in fact. Their “Coven Crew” and “Gather ‘Round Sisters” makeup and accessories are every fan’s dream and more. They even have a black-flame candle!

4. The new Halloween (Michael Myers) movie

Halloween is a classic horror movie. What’s better than watching a man in a mask chasing people around with a giant knife? The thriller saga continues this year with “Halloween Kills” and is set to release in theaters on October 15th. Will you brave the theaters to watch it?

5. Spirit Halloween versus Party City smackdown

I may have a bias when it comes to Halloween stores; I worked at Spirit Halloween last season and loved all of the decor, costumes, props, and party supplies. Since I cosplay year-round as a hobby, I also find myself in Party City at times looking for the right accessory. This article by Insider sums up the two stores pretty well as far as selection and pricing. Plus, who can beat the memes?

I hope everyone is excited for Spoopy Season this year, and that this list helps everyone get into the spirit of plastic fangs, candy, scary movies, and bloody knives!
